Grantee Update

Sshrishti, KishanGarh, New Delhi

Our first grantee, Sshrishti should receive approval of the Prior Permission application from the Home Ministry  to receive foreign funds based on Small Steps Foundation's Letter of Intent. We'll be sending them the check as soon as they get any one of the two applications approved hopefully in August/September 2007 based on their last follow-up with Home Ministry

The following update on the Sshrishti Learning Center was provided by Ms. Sanghamitra Bose, founder of Sshrishti.  Shrishti has opened after the summer vacation. But children are slowly returning from their villages so some students are yet to rejoin. In the meantime, we have shifted three classes to a new location at Qutab institutional Area. Although we got the place free from the War Widows Association, transporting the children there is proving to be much more expensive than paying rent. We are constrained to move from our present location as the landlord is selling off the property and we have to vacate it by December. We are therefore also looking for another property to take on rent to accommodate the rest of the students. Getting a suitable property within a limited budget is always a very difficult proposition. So, you can well imagine we are going through a tough time getting it all together. The classes are however running smoothly and the children are in good spirit.

Mahita, Chikkadpalli, Hyderabad

We are in the process of evaluating project proposal from Mahita (www.mahita.org) for Community Based Learning Centers (CBLC) for children in the slums located in the Begumpet area of Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The target group of the project will be primarily girls between the age groups of 6 to 14 years to facilitate empowerment and free them from child labor.

Small Steps Foundation News

Small Steps Foundation is still waiting for exemption from federal income tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  The IRS website http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=156733,00.html shows that our exemption application which was filed in March 2007 should be under processing. We plan to mail in the receipt of  all contributions made to Small Steps Foundation as soon as we receive the  501 (c) (3) tax exempt status.
