President’s Corner

Wish you all a Happy New Year 2008 filled with Love, Ambition and Happiness!!

We were busy filing tax returns last December so we couldn’t send out the newsletter before, but we are back on track with the New Year and a New Look.

Our Diwali Dandia in November 2007 was a MEGA SUCCESS. We all are very proud, jubilated and delighted at the wonderful job we all did as an excellent team. The event put us all in the great festive spirits and energies to enjoy DIWALI.

I would like to share with all of you some facts about SSF’s operations and figures, revenues generated due to donations, ticket and dandia sales, sponsorships, etc. To ensure accountability and transparency, Small Steps Foundation maintains two bank accounts.

1)      Donation bank account - 100% of all individual contributions, corporate matching donations, ticket sale and other sale proceeds go to this account. Only projects checks are written from this account. We raised the following amounts, ticket sales: $6400(including Sulekha=$1319) Dandia sticks sale:$550  Snacks & Drinks sale: $600, Donations:$60

2)      Administrative bank account – Combined pooled donations of Directors and other donors who specifically donate to Administrative expenses plus all the sponsorships that we receive from the local small businesses. The cost of the Dandia event was totally covered by Sponsorships and this account was used to write check to the Live Band Artist and the FUSD, school authorities.  We raised the following amounts Food Sponsorship(Chaat Café) = $300, and rest of sponsorships=$3600. We received a refund check of 175 dollars from Sulekha which covered the cost of our advertising on Sulekha, and we still have a check of $250 pending from DirecTV.

Diwali Dandia

SSF Diwali Dandia Nite on November 3rd in the Gymnasium of Centerville Junior High School at 7:30pm was a Grand Success with the recorded attendance of more than 900 people not counting kids under 5 and presence of folks from all over the bay area Livermore, Tracy, Menlo Park, San Jose, Sunnyvale and Berkeley as well as from the Tri-City area.

Kudos and hats off to SSF Volunteers for accomplishing a Super Amazing feat with no prior experience!!

Grantee Update

Sshrishti, KishanGarh, New Delhi

SSF had sent a check to our first grantee, Sshrishti in October’07. But based on the confirmation from Sshrishti’s representative, Ms. Sanghamitra Bose they haven’t received it yet. SSF put a stop order on the check as it might be lost in mail.  SSF sent another check of 1000 USD to Sshrishti through Shaloo Jeswani who visited Sshrishti in December 2007.

Mahita, Chikkadpalli, Hyderabad

SSF project team has put this project on hold based on our project team’s decision and the project proposal that Mahita submitted. Mahita’s (www.mahita.org) project is for Community Based Learning Centers (CBLC) for children in the slums located in the Begumpet area of Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

Surana Village, Jaipur Rajasthan

The SSF Project team has decided to go ahead with the next step which is Site Visit for the project VH Adarsh Vidhya Mandir-Uchch Prathamic Vidhalaya, Surana Village, Jaipur, Rajasthan.  At this time we are arranging logistics to schedule a Site Visit to the school in the next month, as this being a remote location. This school was started at a very small scale in 1999 to provide better education to children living in Surana. In last year’s result of 8th grade board exam 80% of the students scored first division and rest of the 20% second division, there was not even a single third division or a failure in the whole batch. This school provides education from lower KG to 8th grade for a nominal fee which hardly covers rent of this building and salaries of all the staff.

Parichay, Bhajanpura, Delhi

We are currently considering this NFE (non-formal education) project for 45-50 children conducted in remote area of East Delhi. Parichay started its Bal Vikas Kendra (Child Development Center) in April 2000 with the help of some like minded people. It selected an area called Tukhmirpur near Bhajanpura in East Delhi, where 50% of the population is living under unfavorable living conditions. Started with 9 children now Parichay is a family of 56 kids and their family members. This project has a self sustainable model where more than 40% of the income is generated by sale of Handicrafts and Spices.
