President’s Corner

August 2007 has been really very Auspicious for Small Steps Foundation. We recorded two major milestones, we received the long awaited IRS 501 (c ) (3) federal tax exempt status for our organization and also Sshrishti, our first grantee received the approval for the Prior Permission application.  YAHOOO!!!!

Our Diwali Dandia Planning is going on in full swing, and we need help from all of you to spread the word around among your family, friends and co-workers. We have started advertising, distributing flyers, selling tickets. We have made good progress in selling tickets. We were contacted for TV-media coverage by Sitaare and our sponsorship efforts are reaping rewards as well. All the volunteers are very motivated and excited about the coming event!!

Grantee Update

Sshrishti, KishanGarh, New Delhi

Our first grantee, Sshrishti has received the approval of the Prior Permission application from the Home Ministry to receive foreign funds based on Small Steps Foundation's Letter of Intent. We have sent them the agreement letter and will be sending them the check as soon as we receive the agreement letter duly signed by Sshrishti representative, Ms. Sanghamitra Bose in post from them.

Mahita, Chikkadpalli, Hyderabad

We are still in the process of evaluating the project from Mahita (www.mahita.org) for Community Based Learning Centers (CBLC) for children in the slums located in the Begumpet area of Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. We have several questions and that need to be answered before we can go ahead with the next step, Site Visit for this project.

Surana Village, Jaipur Rajasthan

We received a project proposal for VH Adarsh Vidhya Mandir-Uchch Prathamic Vidhalaya, Surana Village, Jaipur, Rajasthan from one of the donors. . This school was started at a very small scale in 1999 to provide better education to children living in Surana. In last year’s result of 8th grade board exam 80% of the students scored first division and rest of the 20% second division, there was not even a single third division or a failure in the whole batch. This school provides education from lower KG to 8th grade for a nominal fee which hardly covers rent of this building and salaries of all the staff. We are in the process of evaluating this project proposal and are waiting on some financial return statements from the school.
